A Chromebook can sign a PDF without Windows or macOS software. You can open a browser-based editor in Chrome, create a signature, place it on the page, and download the completed file.
Docento.app processes the PDF in the browser. You can draw a signature, type one using a signature-style font, or upload an existing image. The original document is not uploaded to Docento for editing.
Prepare the PDF
Locate the source file in the Chromebook Files app. It may be in:
- Downloads.
- My files.
- Google Drive.
- A connected storage provider.
- An email attachment that still needs to be downloaded.
Open the PDF and confirm that it is the correct version. Keep the source unchanged and create a separate signed copy.
If the sender requires a particular electronic-signature platform, use that platform instead. A visible signature added through a PDF editor may not meet a workflow that requires authentication, an audit trail, or certificate validation.
Open the PDF in Docento
- Open Chrome.
- Go to Docento.app.
- Select the PDF upload area.
- Choose the file from Downloads, My files, or Google Drive.
- Wait for all pages to render.
Large files can take longer, especially on entry-level Chromebooks. Keep the browser tab open while the document loads.
Create a signature
Select Sign and then add a signature using one of the available methods.
Draw
Use the trackpad, touchscreen, mouse, or stylus to draw your signature.
For better control on a trackpad:
- Draw slowly.
- Use a larger hand movement rather than small finger movements.
- Clear and retry when necessary.
- Connect a mouse if the trackpad result is difficult to control.
A touchscreen Chromebook with a stylus usually gives the most natural result.
Type
Enter your name and select a signature-style font. This gives a clean mark when drawing is inconvenient.
Remember that a typed visual signature is not the same as a cryptographic digital signature.
Upload
Choose an existing signature image from your Chromebook. A transparent PNG avoids a white box around the signature. Do not upload the image from an untrusted shared folder.
See how to create a transparent signature for a PDF for preparation advice.
Place the signature
After selecting the saved signature:
- Click the required signature field.
- Resize the signature using the handles.
- Move it into the correct position.
- Make sure it does not cover printed text or the date field.
If the document requires initials on other pages, create a smaller initials mark and place it manually at each required location. Follow how to add initials to a PDF for the full workflow.
Add your name and date
Use the text tool for fields that need typed information:
- Select Text.
- Click the required field.
- Replace the placeholder text.
- Adjust the size and position.
Use the exact name and date format requested by the form. Do not fill fields reserved for someone else.
You can also use the tick and cross stamps for ordinary visual selections. Confirm that the recipient accepts flattened marks when the original PDF contains interactive form fields.
Review before exporting
Check every completed page:
- The signature belongs in that field.
- The signature is not stretched or distorted.
- Required initials are present.
- Names and dates are correct.
- No text is hidden.
- No extra marks were added while navigating.
- Every original page remains present.
Do not sign a document with missing pages or blank terms. If the sender changes the document, review and sign the new version rather than copying a signature onto it without reading it.
Export the signed PDF
When the document is complete:
- Select Export.
- Wait for the browser to create the signed copy.
- Save it to Downloads.
- Open the Chromebook Files app.
- Open the downloaded PDF and inspect the signature.
- Rename it clearly before returning it.
For example:
consent-form-signed-2026-07-14.pdf
If you want the file in Google Drive, move or copy the reviewed download into the correct Drive folder. Avoid assuming that the browser download was automatically saved to Drive.
Return the completed document
Use the method requested by the sender, such as:
- Attach the PDF to an email.
- Upload it to a genuine application portal.
- Share it through an approved Drive folder.
- Return it through the organization's signing workflow.
Verify the recipient and attach the downloaded signed copy, not the untouched original.
If the PDF is too large, compress it before signing when possible. Compression after a certificate-based digital signature can invalidate that signature. For an ordinary visible signature created in Docento, you can use Docento's PDF compressor, but review the final document carefully and follow the recipient's instructions.
Privacy on a Chromebook
The editing step occurs locally, but your Chromebook setup may sync files and browser data.
- Downloads remain on the device until removed.
- Files moved to Google Drive are uploaded to that account.
- Saved signatures remain in the browser's local storage.
- A managed school or work Chromebook may be subject to administrator policies.
Delete saved signatures from a shared or borrowed Chromebook. Do not use guest or public devices for sensitive contracts, identity documents, or financial forms unless the organization has provided an approved process.
Troubleshooting
The trackpad signature looks uneven
Use the Type option, connect a mouse, or use a touchscreen or stylus. You can also upload a prepared transparent PNG.
The file picker does not show the PDF
Download the attachment first and look in the Downloads folder. Confirm that the file really ends in .pdf.
Export fails for an encrypted PDF
Docento does not bypass PDF protection. Ask the sender for a signable copy or use the authorized password and approved application. Printing to a new PDF can flatten features and should only be used when permitted.
The signature has a white background
Use Draw or Type in Docento, or upload a transparent PNG rather than a JPEG.
The signed copy is difficult to find
Open Files, select Downloads, and sort by date. Rename the file immediately after confirming it.
Takeaway
On a Chromebook, open Docento in Chrome, select the PDF, create a signature using Draw, Type, or Upload, place it carefully, add any required text, and export a separate signed copy.
Use Docento's free PDF editor for ordinary browser-based visual signing. Use the recipient's dedicated signing service whenever authentication, audit trails, witnesses, or certificate-based signatures are required.
